Tunisian Mosaics

Tunisia has the richest collection of mosaics in the world, covering the Punic to Muslim periods, with the Bardo Museum housing a thousand or works

Undoubtedly, mosaics are one of the most eloquent artistic expressions of antiquity. It was in Tunisia that this important artistic expression had its heyday, and Tunisian mosaics surpassed all the mosaics of other provinces in their richness and finesse, including those of Rome and its region. Today, Tunisia is home to the richest collection of mosaics in the world.

The Bardo National Museum , four kilometres from Tunis , holds the major part of this rich and prestigious collection. Before becoming a museum, this Moorish palace was the residence of the Beys - the monarchs of Tunis . One can still find Mosaics in Carthage , Dougga, Bulla Regia and the Sousse Museum .

The mosaics date from the third and the fourth centuries of the Christian era during which artisans refined their techniques and mastered the use of molten glass, which enabled them to obtain the colours that stones could not provide. Such progress allowed them to reach the splendour still preserved in their work today.

The pictures are of varying sizes - sometimes huge – presenting a variety of themes, such as hunting, fishing, fighting, mythology, scenes of everyday life, farming, the harvests abundance, diversity of produce such as fish and fruit, religious rites, banquets, secular ceremonies, religious processions, feasts, dances and family life. The portrait of Virgil located in the Sousse Museum , is unique. The Triumph of Neptune is one of the greatest mosaics to be found.
